Palm Leather is a material innovation by Studio Tjeerd Veenhoven. It is made by dipping the dry and brittle areca palm leaves in a biological solution that turns them into a soft and flexible leather-like material.

After exploring the places in which areca palms grow, I discovered that there exist strong local-craft based economies. These local crafts use natural materials, low-tech and low energy production methods. This project is an attempt at developing a new low-tech and sustainable craft to produce products with Palm Leather.    The craft technique is not only sustainable but it also addresses the inherent limitations of the material. The technique also provides modularity that the craftspersons can experiment with to make various types of products.
